Fillings

If you require a filling in a tooth, the dentist will discuss the options that are available to you, based on an assessment of the extent of damage to the tooth.

If the filling extends below the gum margin on a back tooth, the dentist may recommend an amalgam metal filling, as the junction between tooth and filling, below the gum margin, is more likely to be successfully sealed, preventing further decay.

The dentist is unlikely to recommend replacing good quality, decay free amalgam fillings with composite resin,  as the composite is not as long lasting as amalgam.

A white filling may be recommended when it would help with the aesthetics in the mouth, and when its longevity is not compromised by it's size and extension.
